Foundry sand mainly includes the following types:
1.Silica sand: The main mineral composition is SiO2.Silica sand can be further divided into natural silica sand, selected natural sand and artificial silica sand. Natural silica sand is used as molding and core sand for non-ferrous alloy casting, cast iron parts ,small casting parts and medium-sized steel costings.Selected natural silica sand is used for various molding sands and core sands with organic compounds as binders.Artificial silica sand is used as molding sand and core sand for steel castings
2.Non siliceous sand: including various types such as quartz sand, limestone sand, etc.Quartz sand is a granular material produced by crushing quartz stone as main raw material, with a color of milky white or semi transparent. It is commonly used in casting, fireproof material.metallurgy.chemical industry and other fields.Limestone sand is made by crushing limestone ,with the main mineral composition being CaCO3.It is used as molding sand and core sand for steel castings. In addition, there are chromite sand, olivine sand ,bead sand. etc.
3.Special sand: when the high-temperature performance of silica sand can't meet the requirements for use, special sand such as zircon sand, chromite sand and corundum sand are used. For example, zircon sand, whose main mineral component is ZrO2, is used as sand core or surface sand or powder coating for large cast steel and alloy steel parts. The main minerals of chromite sand are chromite, magnesiochromite and aluminum magnesium chromite and its main chemical composition is determined to be Cr2O3.The main mineral composition of corundum sand is α - Al2O3,which is used as a shell material for investment casting and ceramic mold casting.
Overall, there are various types os casting sand ,and different types of casting sand are suitable for different casing processes and casting types. When selecting casting sand,it is necessary for follow specific casting requirements and conditions.
